The thing that would concern me is her chosen profession. If she’s a writer, artist, actor or the like and not able to support herself, it’s possible she’s never been able to support herself. It’s one thing to work a job that supported you and to be hit by the economy and need financial assistance from family. It’s an entirely different story to have your parents supporting you while you pursue a fantasy. In the last two years I’ve dated actresses and writers in their thirties who worked two and even three jobs so they could pay their rent for their apartment in Asotoria or Hoboken. A woman who is almost 40 who insists on living in Manhattan while she toils away at success that never comes while living off her parents would not be an ideal partner for me. I think Jay has a right to be concerned.

I doubt the current economy has anything to do with her living situation; few artists are financially successful, and if she’s still in that field at 38, odds are her parents have been supporting her for her entire life. However, if the OP were to marry her, her parents would most likely assume he would take over that responsibility.

Depending on how long ago the apartment was purchased, that might actually turn out to be a pretty good deal for the OP; the payments may well be lower than rent on an apartment of his own, they’ll never go up, and if they divorce he’ll get to keep half of the equity he paid for during the marriage. OTOH, he’d almost certainly have to pay her alimony since she’s proven unable to support herself.
